NordVPN vs. IPVanish
If you’re looking to browse the internet securely without geographic restrictions, a virtual private network (VPN) is the way to go. These days, VPN providers give you access to very fast servers that will keep your details and devices secure.
In this battle, we pit NordVPN and IPVanish head-to-head to see which one offers the best VPN for you. Take a look at our battle to see who came out on top, to better inform your decision.
|Pricing||Starts at $5.75/mo.||Starts at $6.49/mo.|
NordVPN and IPVanish are both top companies in the VPN industry and provide security, speed, and reliable features. With both companies set up is a breeze, and users are given access to hundreds of servers around the world to surf off. They also provide top customer service, affordable pricing, and security that will safeguard them from an entire world of threats.
It doesn’t matter if you’re a civilian – you can still get access to “military-grade encryption” with NordVPN. The company’s security is known as advanced encryption standard (AES), and was developed and first deployed by the US government to provide cyber security for the National Security Agency. Chances are you’re not facing the same threats as the NSA, but it’s good to know you’ve got some serious firepower on your side, which also includes IKEv2/IPsec, a system that uses cryptographic algorithms and keys to secure data.
An extra layer of protection is offered by NordVPN’s double encryption. The company puts all of your traffic through a VPN tunnel and your traffic has to pass through multiple locations and is encrypted twice. If personal security and keeping yourself cloaked and anonymous online are important to you, this is a real asset.
In addition, NordVPN’s CyberSec service automatically scans any and all websites for malicious content and blocks ones that are seen as a potential threat.
IPVanish is no slouch when it comes to security either. The company uses 256-bit AES that gives you the type of security people at say, the NSA would use.
Another security feature is a “kill switch” that automatically severs you internet connection if the VPN is dropped and/or left unprotected. This feature ensures that your security is in place no matter what happens.
Both companies maintain strict “no logging” policies that stipulate that none of your online activity or private data is recorded or stored at any time.
NordVPN simply has more security options for customers.
Ease of use
Getting NordVPN working requires simply downloading it and following the instructions. It’s simple enough that it should only take a few minutes no matter what your level of expertise. Most of the setup takes place on its own without you having to do anything but click on a prompt.
Installing NordVPN is as easy as going to the company website, clicking on Get VPN now, choosing and purchasing a plan. After it downloads you just unzip it and install.
IPVanish is also a snap, and shouldn’t take more than a few minutes. You can pick between automatic or manual setup, and the setup page includes visual guides with step-by-step instructions.
Setup is simple with both services, but with NordVPN it's really as easy as possible, and requires nothing more than just sitting back and clicking.
With NordVPN you’ll have access to ultra-fast service out of more than 1100 servers in 60+ countries. The service allows you to run Tor off your VPN, maximizing your anonymity online. In addition, NordVPN will always offer you unlimited bandwidth and no speed limits.
All NordVPN customers can receive their own dedicated IPN address and use their NordVPN on up to 6 devices at the same time.
The service also includes a kill switch that will cut off the internet if your VPN crashes, meaning you don’t have to fear losing your security.
A kill switch is also provided on IPVanish, as is unlimited bandwidth. Both services include zero traffic logs, and while IPVanish only allows you to use it on 5 devices as opposed to 6 with NordVPN, it also provides unlimited server switches.
With either company you can access many of the same features, but with NordVPN you can use it on more devices and have access to a larger system of servers.
Value for Money
You’re not going to break the bank with either company, but IPVanish does give you a better bargain, if not by a ton.
|1 month plan = $11.95/month||1 month plan = $7.50/month|
|1 year plan = $5.75/month||1 year plan = $4.87/month|
|6 month plan = $7.00/month||3 months = $6.74/month|
NordVPN starts at $11.95 if you’re paying by month, and the prices get cheaper the longer the plan. The service runs $7/month for a 6-month plan and $5.75/month for a year-long plan. With IPVanish, the service starts at only $10/month, which is one of the more affordable options for a top VPN service. After that, if you order a three-month plan it’s $8.99/month, and if you sign up for a whole year it’s only $6.49/month.
Though NordVPN can work on more devices (6 as opposed to 5), the price for IPVanish remains more affordable.
If you run into trouble using your VPN, know that NordVPN has an extensive online knowledge base and troubleshooting guide that should sort you out. You can also submit a ticket through the online form and wait for a reply, or try the live chat option. Representatives can also be contacted through the company’s social media accounts.
On the company website, IPVanish has an extensive FAQ section where you should be able to get some answers. Other than that, it does have 24/7 customer support, though the response time leaves a little something to be desired. You also have the option to fill out an email form and use the live chat, though it’s only available during office hours.
Customer service was more responsive and easier to figure out with NordVPN.
Overall Winner: NordVPN
To be honest, this one wasn’t that close. NordVPN was our clear winner, but as one of the top VPN providers in the industry, this shouldn’t come as a surprise. Both companies offer some of the same features like kill switches and no log policies, and unlimited bandwidth. NordVPN has the edge though in that it allows you to secure up to 6 devices with some of the best security and privacy features on the market, is easy to set up and use, and has very reliable customer support. That said, IPVanish is a reliable service with a wide variety of features and solid security at an affordable price, but it just doesn’t offer as much as NordVPN.
