Avast VPN is built on OpenVPN and OpenSSL security to keep your internet activity entirely hidden from prying eyes and protected from hackers. Avast’s 256-bit AES encryption ensures that no one can discover what you’re up to online, along with leak-proof DNS protection and a zero-logs policy so that Avast itself can’t track your internet usage. Avast’s VPN doesn’t slow down your internet activity with bandwidth caps or throttling so you can still enjoy gaming, streaming, and downloading at high speeds. P2P file sharing is available through some servers and 52 servers in 33 countries worldwide ensure that you can unblock any content wherever you live or visit.

Avast brings the same commitment to your security through its VPN as it does with the rest of its antivirus software. The VPN is highly reliable and does not show any signs of weakness, including succeeding in unblocking American Netflix from overseas which is often unpredictable for VPNs. Avast is located in the Czech Republic which has no laws about sharing data with government authorities. Avast also only collects metadata, never content, and the metadata it does collect is deleted after 30 days.
Avast is also strong in the speed it offers users. Using Avast doesn’t slow down your browsing, permits fast downloading and streaming, even of high-definition movies, and enables gamers to enjoy lag-sensitive twitch gaming without any delays or latency. Eight data center servers are optimized for P2P file sharing and torrenting, which keeps things running smoothly.
High speed internet
Torrenting and peer-to-peer file sharing
Plans for 1 to 5 devices
Avast offers packages for up to 5 devices that enable you to access secure, encrypted connections, high speed internet, and peer to peer file sharing and torrenting. Avast’s 52 worldwide servers include 8 data center servers optimized for P2P file sharing and torrenting and high capacity that can cope with surges in demand. Avast doesn’t serve you any ads along with its service.
Unlike some VPNs, Avast doesn’t offer a range of package deals. There’s only 1 yearly VPN package which is the same for every customer. You can choose between buying a package for Mac or PC for your home computer, or one for Android or iOS to cover your smartphone. Although the price varies, every plan offers the same level of security, the same high speed internet, and the same features. You can buy the all in one package which includes coverage for up to 5 devices with the 1 plan, but there’s no option for routers or Linux operating systems.
Avast’s relative lack of extra features has a positive flip side – it’s an extremely easy to use VPN. Setup is simple. If you’re already an Avast customer and have the Avast antivirus software installed on your device, you’ll find that Avast’s VPN is already there, too. All you need to do is activate it with your paid key. The Avast standalone version of SecureLine VPN is not much harder to install either. You’ll just need to download the standalone software file and click Run. The Avast startup wizard will guide you through every step of the way.
Because there are very few configuration options, Avast VPN is fast and easy to use straight out of the box. Once you’ve installed the software on your device, all you need to do is double-click the icon to launch the software and click Connect to get online securely in seconds. The user interface is clean, simple, and easy to navigate. You can choose your preferred server from a drop-down list of options or allow Avast to connect you automatically to the closest server. If you try to connect to a public hotspot and forget to activate Avast before you do so, a message box will pop up automatically to ask if you’d like to connect through Avast.
Avast’s security and privacy are impressive. The VPN is built upon OpenVPN protocols which are the highest available, along with OpenSSL security libraries. The open source encryption adds an extra layer of reliability to Avast’s security. DNS leak protection helps prevent any clues about your IP address, even when using IPv4 and IPv6. When you use Avast, all your internet data is encrypted using 256-bit AES encryption.
Avast also promises not to sell the data that you share when you register with any third parties. The company is based in the Czech Republic, which doesn’t have any mandatory data reporting laws which could force Avast to hand over information about you and your internet activity. Even if such a thing were to happen, Avast would not be able to reveal anything about your data usage thanks to the strict zero-logs policy. Avast maintains that it only collects unidentifiable metadata, never any content, and that even the metadata it does collect is deleted after 30 days.
|Single Device||Up to 5 Devices|
Avast doesn’t offer a huge range of pricing options. You can choose whether you want to buy a license for your Mac or PC computer, or you can buy one for an Android or iOS smartphone or tablet. If you have a number of devices to cover you can buy the multi-device package for up to 5 devices at a discounted price of $63.99 per year.
Avast offers extensive online support via the website, with a large and easily searchable FAQ and troubleshooting section and plenty of customer forums for crowdsourcing solutions. Unfortunately, it’s not easy to get in touch with the company directly for personal support. There is an online form for email support but you need to go through the relevant section of the troubleshooting site before you can find it. Avast does offer a telephone tech support line for premium support customers. There’s no live chat and no regular telephone support on offer.
Overall, the Avast SecureLine VPN offers a high level of security and fast internet usage but is low on features and configuration options. The high level of success in unblocking geo-restricted content makes it a good choice for travelers or expats, but only if you are close enough to a server since the server network isn’t very large. If you’re looking for a simple, easy to use VPN that keeps your internet activity and personal data private and doesn’t limit your downloading, torrenting, or gaming possibilities, you’ll be happy with Avast VPN. Users who want to adjust their own settings or add a VPN to their router will want something with more customizable options.
